World Water Day is celebrated on March 22, which this year is dedicated to the Nature of water, especially the development of solutions based on nature capable of addressing the main challenges of society: climate change, human health, socio-economic development, food and water security. From the Group of Manufacturers of Evaporative Cooling Equipment of AEFYT (Association of Companies of the Cold and its Technologies), we want to take advantage of the occasion to influence how evaporative cooling can contribute to the achievement of many of these challenges.

The principle of operation of evaporative cooling, used in cooling towers and condensers, allows, from a natural solution such as water, to address most of the challenges set in this edition.

This year, in addition, the Group of Manufacturers of Evaporative Cooling Equipment wants to insist on one of the main strengths in favor of these teams at a time, like the current one, in which the valuation of the economic costs is vital: the scarce footprint hydraulics left behind by these equipment, a benefit in line with water security. It is an environmental indicator (HH), which evaluates the total volume of fresh water used in the production of goods and services, an element to be taken into account in the evaluation of the economic cost of any product, at the same time as a reference that , among other issues, allows to evaluate which technology is more convenient to use.

The evaporative cooling has been able to adapt to the new demands of the environment and the available natural resources. The use of water is part of one of these environmental advantages of these equipment. On the one hand, 95% of the water used in a tower is reused – with a minimum loss due to evaporation and dragging. On the other hand, the lower energy required for the operation of these facilities compared to the air cooling equipment implies significant savings in the cost of water at source derived from the electrical production necessary for its maintenance.

The responsible and sustainable use that evaporative cooling makes of this resource contributes to reduce the effects of climate change. Water is a natural refrigerant that does not contribute CO2 emissions, so it is a clean and environmentally friendly technology and, in particular, these equipment contribute to the reduction of its consumption and the improvement of its use, in the measurement that a small quantity of the water in recirculation evaporates and another one is evacuated to avoid the concentration of salts. The quality of water, its safe reuse and the reduction of atmospheric pollution are some of the contributions of evaporative cooling in this regard.

Finally, evaporative towers and condensers allow to guarantee energy efficiency in air conditioning systems with the consequent economic savings, so they are used in a wide spectrum of industrial applications, and can represent an annual savings of 25,000 euros in consumption. electric power. It is, without doubt, a technology with a high weight in socio-economic development.

The World Water Day, instituted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1993, emphasizes the importance of this natural resource for life and sustainable development. It is coordinated by UN-Water, a UN collaboration mechanism for issues related to drinking water in which governments and other entities participate.
