Control y Ventilación, S.L. echoes the present news, which we transcribe.

Eurovent Market Intelligence (EMI), the European statistics office on the refrigeration and air conditioning market, has just published the results of its studies on 2016 sales in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, based on in the data collected among a large number of manufacturers in the sector. This year, the diversification and improvement of its services constitutes the cornerstone of EMI.

Fan coil units (Fan Coil Units)

After considerable growth in 2015, the fan coil market stabilized in 2016, with growth of approximately 3% in the European Union, that is, 1.61 million units throughout the EMEA region. It is worth noting the good recovery of sales in Turkey and Russia, which registered increases of 40% and 15%, respectively. The market continued to grow in Spain and the United Kingdom (+ 20% and + 7%, respectively) and remained relatively stable in countries such as France and Germany. On the other hand, in Italy, a country that represents almost 20% of the fan coil market in the EMEA region, there was a decrease in sales volume (-4%), which stood at around 318,000 units in 2016.

As for the types of fan coils, the trend remains the same as in previous years. In this way, those of two tubes occupy 77% of the market, against 23% of those of four tubes. From the perspective of the design, bodied and non-bodied fan coil units represent 30% of the market respectively, and the models of the “cassette” type and with “optional lining” share the rest of the market.

Air treatment plants

The market for air treatment plants rose in Europe in 2016 to 1,900 million euros, of which 409 corresponded to Germany, 321 million to Northern Europe, 220 million to Eastern Europe, 131 million to Russia and the CIE, and 130 million to Turkey. As in 2015, the European Union market remained rather stable. On the other hand, the declines continued in Russia and the Middle East, with a loss of around 20% in these regions, and in Africa, where the market lost 15% of its value. Germany, which had registered a steep decline in 2015, seems to be stabilizing. However, it remains the market leader with almost 20% of the sales figure, followed by the Nordic countries that hold almost 15%.

As regards the European market, it is dominated (quantitatively) by the low power units (5 000 m3 / h) that represent approximately 60% of the units sold, and even of very low power, since a 16 % are less than 1 000 m3 / h. At the level of the Eurovent energy class, more than half are placed in the highest categories (A and A +) and 15% in category B.

Within the European Union, the market is distributed to almost equal parts between plate exchangers and wheel exchangers, against only 5% of the exchangers ‘run-around-coil’ and ‘heat pipes’. It should also be noted that almost 40% of the units sold are compact.

Chillers

The group chiller market reached 24.5 million kW in the EMEA region, of which 16.5 million correspond to the European Union.

In Europe there is a very clear segmentation between the different powers. Thus, low and medium power units are sold more in southern Europe. As in previous years, we find the trio formed by Italy, France and Spain in the segment of machines with a power of less than 700 kW. Italy retains its leading position with 25% of the market. France and Spain are behind it with market shares that can reach 12%. In the segment of the machines of a power superior to 700 kW, the structure is different, since Turkey occupies the first place with a market share of 15%, followed very closely by Germany with 13.5%.

As for the evolution, the situation is not very favorable for France and the United Kingdom, which recorded decreases of 12% and 20%, respectively. In the case of Spain, Italy and Germany, the situation is rather stable with an evolution that ranges between -2% and + 2%. Outside the European Union, the Russian market suffered a 10% decrease.

From the technological point of view, groups of frozen water production of unlined air predominate, which represented 80% of the market. If we exclude the powers below 50kW, of which the residential heat pumps are part, to concentrate on the medium and large capacity units, half of the market corresponds to the groups of production of frozen water of air without lining of type ‘ cold only ‘, of which 7% has an indirect integrated free-cooling system, and approximately 15% to ice cold water production groups.

In the segment of compressors integrated in units below 50 kW, the market consists almost exclusively of rotary compressors, one half of standard and the other half controlled by inverters (inverter driven). In the case of units over 50 kW, we find a greater number of helical compressors (standard or inverter) or magnetic lift; the part of the latter increases as the power rises, to finally constitute 95% of the market for units higher than 700 kW (of which slightly less than 10% are magnetic lift compressors).

The sector of information technology refrigeration (IT cooling)

The chiller market for information technology rises to 29,300 units sold within the European Union in 2016, of which 65% were air conditioners of clean rooms, 18% of monobloc air conditioners, 16% of refrigeration units for telecommunications equipment and 1% of air treatment plants.

At the head is Italy with 5,300 units sold, followed by Germany with 4,630 units, France and the United Kingdom with about 3,800 units each.

In the air conditioners of rooms in the European Union there was a decrease of 10% with respect to the previous year, of 12% in Spain and Portugal, and of 24% in Italy, the highest of all. In contrast, Benelux and France enjoy better health with rises of 8% and 6%, respectively.

In the EMEA region, two thirds of the units sold were direct expansion and the rest were water chillers. This proportion is the same in many countries in this region, except France and Germany, where water chillers predominate, accounting for just over 50% of sales. In terms of power, 50% of water chillers have a capacity greater than 60 kW, while 60% of direct expansion units have a capacity of less than 30 kW. On the other hand, there is an upward trend in the CRAC units with modulation compressor (14% of the units sold) or the integrated free-cooling option (4% of the units). In the FTA market, units with free cooling already account for more than half of the units sold.

Air filters

As in previous years, the filter market remained fairly stable in the European Union with close to 950 million euros. Once again, Germany occupies the first place with a market share of 19%, followed by the Scandinavian countries with 14%, followed closely by France with 12%.

The countries with the highest growth were Sweden and France, with increases of 20% and 12%, respectively. Germany, the United Kingdom and Denmark suffer a contraction of the order of 2%. On the other hand, the situation is depressing in Russia, Africa and the Middle East, which suffer drops of over 10%.

With regard to technologies, fine and medium filters still represent more than half of the market. Then come the HEPA-ULPA type filters with market shares around 20%. Regarding the media, bag filters represent 50% of the market. In second place are the panels with 28% and then the type V filters with a market share of 16%.

The European market is still essentially a renewal market that represents 90% of the market.

Heat exchangers

After having experienced a slight decrease in 2015, the heat exchanger market stabilized this year, reaching a sales volume of 990 million euros in the EMEA region in 2016. This stability is due to France and Spain, while the markets of Italy and Germany suffered a reduction of 6%.
In market share, Germany retains the most important share, with 15%, followed by Italy with 15% and France with 9%.

Outside the European Union, Russia represents the largest market share, with 10%, followed by the Middle East with 9%.

Contrary to what happened in previous years, the air-air exchangers gain ground and represent 25% of the market this year. The rest of the market consists of evaporators (45%), condensers (22%) and CO2 and air exchangers (8%).

In terms of applications, this market continues to be dominated by commercial (29%) and industrial (19%) refrigeration, and only 17% corresponded to comfort applications (heating, air conditioning, etc.); the renewal of machines represented 66% of the market in the EMEA region compared to 34% of new units.

Cooling towers

The market for cooling towers contracted by around 5% this year in the EMEA region. A closer analysis of the causes of this trend indicates that the evolution has been mitigated. In fact, France, Germany and Spain registered decreases that can reach 20%, while the situation is improved in other countries, such as the United Kingdom or Turkey with a growth of around 12%.

In Europe, the market leader continues to be Germany with 11%, followed by Italy (9%) and followed very closely by Turkey (8%). Outside Europe, the Middle East has a market share of 12%.

The distribution of cooling tower technologies does not change in the European area, since open systems still represent approximately two thirds of the market compared to closed systems. Some countries are the exception, such as Belgium, where this relationship is reversed, and France and Turkey, countries where the number of closed towers is slightly higher than that of open towers.

Regarding the installed power, most of the installations (60%) have less than 10 cells, and only 2% of the installations have more than 50 cells. In Russia and its former satellite countries we find the largest number of high power units, but there are also in Finland and Turkey.

Cold beams

The market of cold beams rose to 65 million euros in Europe in 2016, of which 28 million correspond to Northern Europe (the largest market), around 6 million to France and the United Kingdom, 3.2 million to Italy and 2.8 million to Germany. Worldwide, the European market registered an increase of around 10%. This was due above all to the strong increase, over 20%, in Sweden, Italy, the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is also worth noting an increase of around 15% in Eastern Europe. However, we should point out that this increase was due to the decline of the Russian market, which suffered a decrease of more than 20%, and of the French and Turkish markets (-5%).

As regards the distribution of the types of cold beams, the ‘active’ units represent more than 90% of the market. It is, on the other hand, a market focused on the acquisition of new units, since only a quarter of the units sold are used for renovation.

Dehumidifiers of swimming pools

The market for pool dehumidifiers remained relatively stable in 2016. The market for single flow units rose to 6,400 units in the EMEA region (ie approximately 60% of the market), of which 1,500 in France and 1,300 in Germany. The market for double-flow dehumidifiers (40% of units) contracted by 8% to reach around 4,800 units sold in the EMEA region. Also in this segment, the largest market share corresponds to Germany and France, with 660 and 550 units sold respectively.
